| In
Krapje the traditional architecture typical of central Posavina is
preserved better than almost anywhere else. Hence in 1995 Krapje
was proclaimed Architectural Heritage Village, and is counted an
A-category European cultural heritage. The distinctive image of the
village is made up of stretches of wooden houses, mostly turned with
their narrow side on to the road, while the entrances are side-on
in the courtyards. Alongside them are various farm-buildings, each
one of them with its own special purpose. There are byres, barns,
drying sheds, stores, pigsties, racks for drying maize, hen-houses
and so on. They are built of horizontally laid oak planks, joined
with wooden wedges. The picturesque appearance of the houses is emphasised
by the covered external staircases, the porches, protective eaves
and the richly decorative details of the rails and pillars. |

In Krapje several
houses are currently undergoing conversion and renovation to be the
HQ of the Lonjsko Polje Nature Park, and in house no. 1 there is
already an Info and Educational
Centre. The staff of the Park are
happy to acquaint the many visitors to the Park not only with the
details of the cultural heritage but also with the rich history of
the area. There is no doubt at all that the Military Border that
existed here for almost 350 years not only protected Europe from
aggressive inroads from the south but was paradoxically an open zone
for economic and cultural exchange. The very particular natural surrounds
of Krapje are responsible for Krapje
đol having been proclaimed the
first Croatian bird sanctuary back in 1963. This is an exceptionally
important habitat for protected water fowl such as the spoonbill
and the grey heron.
Each year, at the end of June, European
Heritage Days are observed
in Krapje, and on the occasion the many guests can enjoy a programme
rich in cultural and educational matters, in recreation and entertainment. |
