The white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla)

With its powerful constitution this is the biggest of the eagles in Croatia. It nests in the forest close to large areas of water – floodplains, rivers, lakes and coastal zones.  Thanks to a wingspan of from 2 to 2.5 metres, it can sail on updrafts of warm air.  Its sharp claws on its feet are its most deadly weapon, ensuring it a copious and diverse supply of prey.  About 15% of the Croatian population of this bird nests in the area of Lonjsko Polje Nature Park.  The stability of the 36 nesting pairs is an indicator of the preservation of the integrity of the lowland riparian forests of the central Sava valley, and Lonjsko Polje thus occupies an important position in the population of eagles in the whole Danube basin
